Народився у Києві 1972 року в родині відомих спадкоємних митців Прахових-Гончарових. Закінчив Національну академію образотворчого мистецтва та архітектури (майстерня книжкової графіки, керівник – професор Чебаник Василь Якович). Нині Микола працює художником у Національному центрі народної культури «Музей Івана Гончара», Національному меморіальному комплексі Героїв Небесної Сотні – Музеї Революції Гідності.
